Mission in the City

Designed by Stevens-Lawson Architects and Rewi Thompson Architects, the Mission in the City project is a visionary re-development of the Auckland City Mission Hobson Street site. Mission in the City will include a mix of community and commercial ventures designed around the idea of transformation - from transforming architecture and urban design, to transforming lives.

For 70 years Auckland City Mission has been a leader in developing innovative social services and the Mission in the City project carries on this legacy to provide opportunities to a number of excluded groups:

  • For the homeless it will provide accommodation in a caring and supportive community in which to live. 80 studio apartments will be provided along with common rooms, libraries and support services.
  • For the inner city, low-income, flat dwellers, it will provide open space, cafes, shops and health facilities where they reside.
  • For solo-parents wanting to attain tertiary qualifications, it will help to shorten this journey from 13 years to 3 years. The provision of 53, two and three bedroom apartments will allow single parents to enroll in tertiary institutions and complete their qualification in a supported environment.
  • 10 one bedroom apartments will be available on a market rental basis to allow for an important community mix

Mission in the City will also cater for the expansion of other Mission services, including a 20 bed residential Detox facility and new medical rooms for the Calder Centre. The building of Mission in the City will secure the presence of social services in the inner city for generations to come. Mission in the City is Auckland City Mission's gift to the people of Auckland.

Mission in the City is a partnership involving St-Matthew-in-the-City, Housing New Zealand, Auckland City Council and the Committee for Auckland. It is one of the key strategies in Auckland City Council's Homeless Action Plan 2008 - 2013.
