Community Services:
Auckland City Mission's team of Community Social Workers provide practical assistance and social work support to people in their own homes. By working with people where they live, Social Workers are able to identify appropriate solutions and review their effectiveness for the individual or family. Through community support, the Mission is able to address the larger issues of marginalisation faced by clients, rather than just immediate needs.
Auckland City Mission provides support to:
- People who are sick
- Isolated elderly
- People with mental illnesses
- People with addictions
- Families with housing difficulties.

Community Services for Older People:
Many older people are isolated and living alone. They are unable to come to the Mission for help - so we go to them.
Last year saw a significant increase in the number of elderly people needing help. More people needed food parcels, many needed help paying utility bills, and more and more needed low-cost Doctors visits.
For many it was the first time they had asked for 'charity'. They had worked hard, saved hard and invested cautiously. But they hadn't counted on the huge financial pressures brought on by the recession. Some had lost all their retirement savings - through no fault of their own. Many were deeply shamed by the situation they found themselves in, but were literally unable to live day-to-day without the Mission's help.
Auckland City Mission also works closely with Housing New Zealand to assist those living with Diogenes Syndrome or suffering from isolation.
Community Service - Drug and Alcohol:
Two registered drug and alcohol workers provide support to clients before they enter the Missions Detox service and when they go home. It is often this support that enables clients to stay clean and sober.
The Mission's Alcohol and Drug Community worker helps the client continue the success of detoxifying and supports them through all phases of recovery. They work with the client as well as their partner, family and friends. A significant component of recovery is helping the client identify ways of reducing the stress that accompanies major changes in behaviour and new living situations.
The Mission works with clients to provide assistance with sorting debt problems; dealing with agencies such as the courts and Work and Income; accessing vocational training; and obtaining housing and employment.
Caring at Christmas:
Each Christmas, the Mission works to ensure that everyone in the community has something to celebrate. The Mission distributes thousands of food parcels; collects and distributes Christmas presents to disadvantaged Aucklanders, directly and via other community groups; and hosts a traditional Christmas Day dinner for up to 2,000 guests.
Christmas is an opportunity for the whole community to demonstrate its capacity for kindness and compassion.
