What we do

The Auckland City Mission provides unique and specialised health and social services to marginalised Aucklanders, helping them to move forward. The Mission offers hope to individuals and families who may be experiencing a temporary set back or a long-term problem that needs expert attention.

Whether it's a specific issue that has led people to the Mission, the effects of the continuing poverty cycle, or a culmination of many problems, the Mission's Social Workers are there to help guide people through the steps to change.

On arrival at the Mission, one of the social workers will take time to talk through a persons situation in depth - to really try to understand what is going on for them.

The Mission doesn't just hand out a food parcel and send people on their way. Staff provide advice, give immediate assistance, make referrals to other services and develop a plan to help people make improvements in their lives.

The focus is two-fold: what are a persons immediate needs; and what can be changed to make improvements in the future.

The initial assessment with a Social Worker is one step in an integrated approach within Mission services. The Homeless team, Calder Centre staff and Detox personnel work along with the Community and Crisis Social Workers to ensure the best outcome for those accessing service. For example, Social Workers assess ability to pay in order to determine the fee structure for access to the Calder Centre Doctors; referrals to the residential Detox unit are preceeded by a Drug and Alcohol assessment carried out by one of the Crisis and Community Team Social Workers.

Working in Partnership

Auckland City Mission staff work closely with many different organisations. Effective communication and strong relationships across agencies provide better outcomes for all clients. It ensures that people receive the full support available to them, helps to minimise service duplication and guides future service and policy development.
