Why leave a gift to the Auckland City Mission?
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Auckland City Mission is able to support thousands of Aucklanders in desperate need every year, providing much-needed services 365 days of the year for people like James:
James was hit by a car at 5 years old, which left him with a head injury and an intellectual disability.
He was raised by his Grandmother and lived with her for 25 years. When she died, James had nowhere else to go and started sleeping on the streets. By the time the Mission’s Homeless Outreach Team first met James, he had been sleeping rough for over a decade.
The team met up with him regularly and over the course of 8 months began to build trust, eventually forming a strong relationship. James finally visited the Mission one day, saying “I don’t want to be on the streets anymore.”
The Auckland City Mission’s services were there when he needed us. Once we assessed James’ needs, we helped him immediately by arranging temporary accommodation, a food parcel and medical care.
Hours of advocacy paid off when James moved into his Housing New Zealand flat. We also sourced ACC funding for a support person to assist James to live well in his new home.
Today, James is in a good place in his life. He enjoys having friends over, watching TV, building puzzles and attending church. He is a talented artist and a number of his pictures can be found hanging on the Mission’s walls.
The team check on James regularly to ensure that he is making the transition into accommodation a lasting and successful one. James now works as a parking attendant, has been in accommodation for 18 months and has successfully made his accommodation his home.
Ongoing support is key to ensuring that people don’t revert back to old ways when they encounter stressful situations.
Together, we can continue the great work you have supported during your lifetime.
