Leave a legacy

Since our doors opened more than 100 years ago, Auckland City Mission – Te Tāpui Atawhai has responded to the social needs of the city with care and compassion. A bequest gift from you will help us continue providing support to those in greatest need in the years to come.   You’ll help ensure we can offer access to permanent and sustained housing, enough nutritious food to eat, and good quality, low-cost heathcare while advocating for a more equitable society for all.

Our vision is a Tāmaki Makaurau where everyone can thrive.  By leaving a bequest to the Mission, your legacy will live on this vision.

The decision

The decision to leave a bequest to the Mission is significant. It is very important that you speak to your loved ones and seek appropriate, objective advice.   The Mission encourages you to look after your family and friends first when finalisng your Will and is grateful for any gift you wish to leave after that. Once you have decided to proceed with completing a Will, you should see a solicitor to manage the paperwork on your behalf.

Types of gift

The three main types of gifts you can bequest to Auckland City Mission – Te Tāpui Atawhai are:

  • Percentage gift: This is a percentage of your estate and will ensure inflation doesn’t erode the value of your gift over time.
  • Residual gift: This is the remainder of your estate, or a percentange of, after loved ones are looked after and expenses deducted.
  • Pecuniary gift: This is a specific monetary amount such as $10,000.

Which type of bequest you choose to go with will very much depend on your personal circumstances and what suits you best.

Wording your gift

The wording of your Will is also very important. A solicitor can help you with this but an example of the wording required is:

“I give and bequeath to Auckland City Mission CC22938, the sum of $XXX (or) XXX% of my estate (or) the residue of my estate free of all charges to be used where most needed. The official receipt of Auckland City Mission will be sufficient acknowledgement of having received this gift.”

Our supporters

Sandra bequested  25% of her estate to Auckland City Mission –  Te Tāpui Atawhai. Her former partner and best friend of 33 years, Erica,  spoke fondly of Sandra:

“Sandra was proud to be a nurse for 35 years, her last job being triage nurse at North Shore hospital A&E. She loved people and medicine, loved that fact that she could help people get well. She was a serious lover of animals, dogs, cats, bugs, birds, fish, anything, and she loved being with nature, just sitting and appreciating it. There are 5 tuis in Herne Bay that will be missing her terribly. She left the bequest to Auckland City Mission because of the great work you do indiscriminately for all those that come to you, and because of your support for & inclusion of the rainbow community. Good on you!”

The difference you will make Community stories

It is deeply humbling that you are considering a gift to Auckland City Mission-  – Te Tāpui Atawhai in your Will. Your support truly makes a difference to Aucklanders in greatest need.
